According to E. B. Tylor, in the opening
lines of his book Primitive Cultures (1871):
“Culture is that complex whole which includes
knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, customs and other capabilities and habits
acquired by man as a member of society”. (Page 4).
According to Raymond Williams, in his
book Moving from High Culture to Ordinary
Culture (1958):
"Culture is ordinary: that is the first
fact. Every human society has its own shape, its own purposes, its own
meanings. Every human society expresses these, in institutions, and in arts and
learning. … The growing society is there, yet it is also made and remade in
every individual mind. The making of a mind is, first, the slow learning of
shapes, purposes, and meanings, so that work, observation and communication are
possible. Then, second, but equal in importance, is the testing of these in
experience, the making of new observations, comparisons, and meanings. A
culture has two aspects: the known meanings and directions, which its members
are trained to; the new observations and meanings, which are offered and
tested. These are the ordinary processes of human societies and human minds,
and we see through them the nature of a culture: that it is always both
traditional and creative; that it is both the most ordinary common meanings and
the finest individual meanings. We use the word culture in these two senses: to
mean a whole way of life--the common meanings; to mean the arts and
learning--the special processes of discovery and creative effort. Some writers
reserve the word for one or other of these senses; I insist on both, and on the
significance of their conjunction. The questions I ask about our culture are
questions about deep personal meanings. Culture is ordinary, in every society
and in every mind."
I agree with those
statements. Culture is ordinary; it means that culture indicates a
characteristic of an area, country, or a specific place. Culture usually only
exist in an area and not found in other areas. Culture is ordinary in human
society and human minds. It means culture is not made intentionally, but
rather arises because a social life and human thought. Knowledge, belief, art,
morals, law, customs in a society are indicates characteristic of culture.
So,
in my opinion. Culture is a society that has a characteristic in knowledge,
belief, art, moral, customs or law that can show the uniqueness of that place.
A habit can be said to be a culture if done repeatedly from the past to the
present until the future. If a habit doesn’t happen until future, that means it
is not a culture but only trend.
According to David Bell, in
his book Moving Cyberculture and Theorists (2007):
“Cyberculture
is a way of thinking about how people and digital technologies interact, how we
live together”

According
to Chris Baker theory, KASKUS is including in popular culture because nowadays,
people in Indonesia likes to debate, exchange ideas, give opinions through
KASKUS. Also there is a forum which can do trading and find cheap and good
quality stuff. To doing all of those, people need internet. That’s why KASKUS is
including cyberculture, because people and technologies interact.
KASKUS
in Indonesia provides a unique article that has not previously been publicized.
So that users can get useful information and the most update news. Like another
social network, KASKUS users also can be acquainted with another member. The
majority of members in KASKUS are Indonesia, who strongly supports the progress
of Indonesia. Also members of KASKUS don’t like SARA. There is a forum to
trading, which we can buy or sale (trading) things. Buyer doesn’t have to go
out to buy something because it’s online shopping. Also in trading forum,
member can negotiate with the seller.
But
there are negative impacts on KASKUS. In
trading forum, there are some member who fraud to buyers. Also in forum, there
are posts/threads were deceptive and not trusted (HOAX). There are also members
who share a pornography video or link.
With
the current technological developments, as well as the increasing of Internet
users in Indonesia, KASKUS change the way we communicate, think, and how to
sell and buy. We can communicate with using the internet, using KASKUS to give
an opinion, and can sell and buy in trading forum. KASKUS can also spread the
culture of Indonesia with a thread/post from members of KASKUS.
